KEEGAN Family History
This interesting surname is of Irish origin, and is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic "MacAodhagain". The Gaelic prefix "mac" denotes "son of", and the personal name "Aodhagain" is a diminutive of "Aodh", "fire", originally the name of a pagan god. The great MacAodhagain sept originated in the ancient territory of Ui Maine (comprising mid-Galway and south Roscommon), where they held the hereditary office of "ollav" or awyer to the ruling families. A branch of this important Brehon (law-giving) family settled in the Leinster counties of Wicklow and Dublin, where the name was Anglicized Keegan, the original Anglicized form being Egan...Select Audience

Donna Willabay-Casas
My name is Donna, my grandmother is Marie Keegan who in 1916 traveled from Derry to the US. My great grandparents, Maria (Holmes) Keegan and John Keegan lived in Derrinurn and had 6 girls, including my grandmother. My great grandfather passed in early 1911 and my great grandmother moved to Main St in Drumkeeran. My great grandmother, Maria passed in Jan 1951 in a home in Carrick on Shannon. My great grandfather was a herdsman for A. Fraser a doctor from Lavagh. I'm traveling to Drumkeeran in August and was hoping to pay my respects to my great grandparents resting place but an having a hard time finding them. Their daughters names were Marie, Margaret, Kate, Bridget & Lizzie (twins) and Celia. My grandmother was present at Celia's birth as their father had passed before she was born.
Keegan
My great grandfather was Michael Keegan, born in England but I believe was pure Irish blood.
My DNA is 62% Irish and 21% Scottish and the rest from West Yorkshire. The Irish part is mostly County Leitrim but there is also some dna from Tyrone and Ulster
I believe there was an OโNeil somewhere in our family history too.
Would love to find out more. Many thanks
Colin Maurice Keegan
Researching MacAodhagain YDNA as located in the FTDNA Clan Egan Project. Also studying the various Irish Annals.

I am research Mac Aodhagain YDNA through the FTDNA Clan Egan Project and also the written Histories of the various Irish Annals. I am from a County Longford Edward Keegan, convicted to Australiain 1834 and like over 50% of the Clan Egan, Egan / Keegan testers are known through high level testing as being R-BY198, downstream of R-M222, or predicted to be. I have two American Keegan men who are YDNA matches.

I visited Longford in 2017, such a lovely place. Stood on the hill at Ballymakeegan and looked ove the sea of green. Hard to imagine the horrors the Irish suffered during their years of suppression and the Famine in such a beautiful country. Through DNA testing have discovered distant Keegan and Egan diaspora cousins in the USA mainly.
